Binge watch Iliza at 3am with me

When it comes to being a feminist Ali Wong was not vocal about her support. When in reality a lot of her jokes centered around the empowerment of women, and their equity with other populations. Since I watched Ali Wong I became more explorative about watching comedians, one of which has been Iliza Shlesinger.

Iliza has six Netflix specials, and I may or may not have binged most of them in one night because I just could not stop. I highly, and I mean HIGHLY recommend checking her out I think that her best specials are Unveiled, Elder Millennial, and Confirmed Kills.

The reason I think I was so obsessed with Iliza is not only her amazing vocal impressions, and physical comedy it is her messages. Like Hannah Gadsby she spends time being serious with interventions of comedy. While she has incredibly funny jokes she also peppers in topics like; consent, rape, equity, body positivity, competition among women, perception of women, and politics.

She does it in a way that makes it easy to swallow, but it is still very empowering. Her passion about feminism is very close to mine. We both view feminism as women being brought up and treated with the same respect as men. We both share the idea that being a feminist should not mean telling other women what to do, or what to stop doing because it is conformity. We believe that life is a competition, but all women should be given the opportunity to compete.

It is really exciting to see other women that share your same views be so popular. I wish I had known about these specials earlier, and am really going to be pushing myself to keep exploring comedians. I think that comedy is a place that I made a lot of assumptions about. I never really liked it before this class. My father would watch stand up comedians that were rude, raunchy and inappropriate. I made a stereotype and never really explored it.

On this journey of discovery I would love lots of recommendations on comedians to check out, and for all those also searching please check on Iliza. Even if you hate everything about it, it starts with a dog in a costume literally every time, just saying, it's amazing. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did!

  1. I never liked the stand-up comedy platform before this class either. My exposure to it was limited to the show The Last Comic Standing, which wasn't very funny at all. The entire show felt forced and the comedians didn't have enough time to properly set up their jokes, so they consistently fell flat. Now I understand that stand-up is not only funny, but can also relay an important message to the audience.

  2. I LOVE ILIZA!!! My favorites are Elder Millennial and Unveiled, and I also love how she displays her humor and jokes on stage. She provides a look into topics that are ignored for either lack of caring or them being uncomfortable, and makes them approachable and relatable. She is honestly one of my favorite comedians I discovered on Netflix, and if you ever need a binge-watching partner, just let me know!
