Ways I Relate to the Rooster

This week we read You Can’t Kill the Rooster, by Sedaris. I felt like I really related to this a lot. When he talks about his brother talking so fast, he can barely understand him, I related to that a lot because sometimes my friends say they can’t understand me, however they never give me a reason (61). I also related to when he said the only words you can really understand are the curse words and the phrase “You can’t kill the rooster” (61). I relate to this because I curse, A LOT! Matter of fact the only times I can remember not cursing are some of my blog posts, in emails, and when I’m trying to be professional.

A lot of the time my coach says, “I don’t care if you curse at practice but don’t curse in a game”, and I always think the same thing, “Well I’m an outfielder so no one is going to hear me.” To answer your question, yes, I 100% curse at games, and for the most part no one does hear me.

My favorite part of this is when Rooster says, “Certain motherfuckers think they can fuck with my shit, but you can’t kill the rooster. You might can fuck hum up sometimes, but, bitch, nobody kills the motherfucking rooster. You know what I’m saying?” (62). I relate to this because I’m pretty stubborn and you know what I’ll be the first to say it… I can be a real bitch if someone says the wrong thing to me. I like to think I am pretty nice, but let me tell you, I don’t let people fuck with me or the people I care about. My team, off limits. My sister, off limits. My Dad, off limits. My mother, off limits. There are definitely more people, but that’s a short list for you.

I also love that Sedaris says his brother is very polite to strangers, but when referring to his friends, or family, he always refers to them as bitch or mother fucker (63). I’m the same way. Actually, earlier today I walked into the softball locker room and saw my teammates and I said, “What the fuck is up bitches.” Also, earlier today, my sister called, and I said, “Hey Bitch.”

The story about the fight intrigued me as well, because I’m the type to do something like that too. I do not like to be disrespected. When this guy told him to get out of his face, he said, “Fuck off, fuckface” and when the guy turned around, he punched him (65-66). Although, I was taught never to swing first, if someone swings at me, I will (and this is a promise) swing back. Well the part came for the swinging back when the guy he punched chased him down and kept hitting him “When he was finished” (65-66).

Another part of this that I really enjoyed was when his brother wasn’t even upset about the physical pain, but he was upset because of the way he was going to look for the holidays (66). Now I don’t know about you guys, but my Mamaw LOVES to take pictures. I would be scolded for days if I showed up with my face all messed up.

  3. Your post really made me laugh! I can't say i curse all the time, but around certain people, my filter comes clean off. I can also relate to being super protective of those that are close to me. The phrase, "If you wanna get to them, you have to go through me" is one I really relate to.
